What does a Landscaping Assistant do?

Landscaping Assistants are an entry-level into becoming landscaping technicians. You will learn a variety of skills in this program such as, various soil types, aggregates, ground preparation, water feature construction, sprinkler installation, sod installation, tree, scrub and flower planting, drainage, grading, paver installation and landscaping maintenance.

What does the Landscape Assistant Program include?

OMNIA Training's Landscaping Assistant is a 9-week training program that covers essential aspects of basic landscaping. The training program includes the coverage of the following topics:

Introduction to Basic Landscaping: Includes coverage on landscaping safety regulations and standards, job site safety analysis, basic knowledge on procedures and concepts of landscaping.

Hands-on field training: Students will be trained to demonstrate proficiency in sod installation, base preparation, paving stone and edging installation, sod and seed installation and other landscaping tasks and procedures.

• Overview of roles and responsibilities of a landscape laborer with skid steer training.
• Understanding the significance of skid steer operation in landscape work.

• Introduction to common plants and landscaping features encountered in the field.
• Understanding basic landscape design principles.

• Skid steer components, controls, and safety procedures.
• Introduction to basic skid steer maneuvering and operations.

• Identification and use of common landscape tools and equipment.
• Safety practices and maintenance procedures for landscape tools.

• Preparing sites for landscaping projects utilizing skid steer machinery.
• Understanding and implementing safety protocols on landscaping job sites.

• Techniques for grading and excavation work using a skid steer.
• Understanding soil preparation and leveling for landscaping projects.

• Skid steer operation for material handling and loading in landscaping projects.
• Proper techniques for lifting, carrying, and dumping materials.

• Hands-on practice in skid steer operation for landscape tasks under supervision.
• Practical experience in site preparation, grading, material handling, and project execution.

• Review of the course material through written and practical assessments.

Work Conditions

The standard work week for landscaping assistants is 40 hours (8 hours a day, 5 days a week). As with many careers in construction, there are peak periods that will require you to work overtime. The number of additional hours you work each week depends on the construction sector and region you work in, and will vary from one job to the next.

As a Landscaping Assistant, you may work indoors or outdoors, alone or with a team of construction professionals. The work can be strenuous and may involve considerable lifting, carrying and bending. You may also spend time designing landscapes and advising customers.

As with all careers in the construction industry, safety is the top priority. Landscaping assistants are trained to work safely and take special precautions to protect against injury.

Duties

As a Landscaping Assistant, your duties may include:

  • Planting, transplanting and maintaining flowers, plants, and greenhouse and nursery stock
  • Installing rock gardens, ponds, decks, drainage systems, fences, planters and playground equipment
  • Installing, operating and maintaining watering systems
  • Seeding, sodding and caring for lawns
  • Trimming and pruning hedges, trees and shrubs
  • Identifying plant diseases and insect problems
  • Applying fertilizers and pesticides
  • Consulting with clients on landscape designs, and plant selection and care

Potential Job Opportunities

“Deep utility” means a utility which has facilities buried at a depth greater than 2.5 metres below surface grade. This includes water, storm water and sanitary sewer utilities.

Common duties include unloading and loading materials, equipment, and tools from and onto trucks by hand, digging trenches, and laying concrete. You assist with the construction of pipe sites, ensuring the proper fittings, digging drainage ditches, and cleaning feeder pipes.
A piling operative, or rig driver, is responsible for driving wood, steel, or concrete columns into the ground during construction projects, to provide vital support for structures such as houses, offices, hospitals, bridges, and piers.
Geothermal well systems use the consistent temperature of the earth to heat and cool your property. The energy stored in the ground is transferred using loops of coiled pipe, arranged in various ways called Loops. Homes in hot and cold climates can benefit from a geothermal system.
